If you're someone who always has a podcast on, always has a next task loaded, always finds something to reorganise, respond to, or optimise — you're not managing your workload. You're managing your nervous system. And it's costing you more energy than the work itself.
What the Default Mode Network Actually Does During Stillness
When you stop doing, your brain doesn't rest. It activates. The default mode network (DMN) — a constellation of regions including the medial prefrontal cortex and posterior cingulate cortex — switches on during periods of inactivity. The DMN is responsible for self-referential thought: processing the self, simulating futures, ruminating on the past, integrating emotional experience.
For many high-functioning people, this is precisely the problem. The DMN isn't neutral. What differed was the performance of busyness: the appearance of constant availability and activity, driven not by necessity but by identity and fear.
